UK出身のコミックブックアーティストによるキャラクター作品の展示。
今まで描いてきた数多くのキャラクターを新たに書き下ろし、壁一面に展示いたします。

ジョナサン・チャンドラーは、イギリス人、独学で学んだアーティストで、現在、東京で暮らしながら創作にいそしんでいる。
1977年イングランドのサフォーク州の海辺の村で生まれたが、父親は熟練労働者で仕事の傍ら青少年生活指導員も努めていた。
ジョナサンは、長じて後、ダービー大学で実践的な映画作法を学んだ末、ジョン・カーペンターの1982年公開の古典的 SF ホラー映画 『The Thing（ザ・シング）』についての学位論文とfloating green hat（宙に浮かんでいる緑の帽子）についての自作の映画を提出し卒業した。
2003年、UK国内で出版社Bonehouse Books（ボーンハウスブックス）を創設、現在も継続中の4巻にわたる『Boobytrap』を含む自作7巻のみならず、将来有望な アンダーグラウンド・コミックアーティスト たちの作品を出版している。 とりわけ、 Bonehouse Books 社は ジョナサンの父親チャールズの作品、ならびにティーンエイジャーの作家、マイケル・アドバイヨの連作コミック『They Call Him… The Midnight Ninja』などを世に問うた。
2007年Bonehouse Books社は、これもUKの自主出版グループ、Famicon Express（ファミコン・エクスプレス）〔UKアートコレクティブファミコン社の出版部門〕と合併する。作品出版ならびに配布、双方を行う、グローバ ルな配布組織を作るためである。
同じ2007年、ジョナサンはロンドン、ブリック・レーン（ギャラリー街で有名な通り）沿いのBodhi gallery（ボディー･ギャラリー）でグループ展覧会を開催した。目玉は自作のコミック『Battle For the Planets（惑星戦争）』を下敷きに、アンダーグラウンド・コミックアーティストたちの改作した作品群だった。
彼はまたこの年、1986年公開の映画『Color of Money（ハスラー2）』（1961年公開映画『The Hustler（ハスラー）』の続編）のCherryvale Skate Team（チェリーヴェイル・スケート・チーム）のためにスケートボードをデザインし、さらに2008年、ファミコン社主催のもと、ロンドンのView and Ask Gallery（ヴュウ・アンド・アスク・ギャラリー）で開催されたCubist Dog展に自作を寄せている。ジョナサンの作品は何点かの選集『Sturgeon White Moss』、雑誌『Believer』を出版し、つい最近ではヨーロッパの新聞『Modern Spleen』に掲載された。
なおこの年、年末以後ジョナサンは東京に移り住み、日本の漫画業界の内状を探求し始めた。
ジョナサンの作品はRaymond Pettibon〔レイモンド・プティボン：コミックブックスタイルアーティスト〕、Russ Nicholson〔ラス・ニコルソン：ファンタジーブックのイラストレーター〕、Gary Panter〔ガイリー・パンター：アートコミックスアーティスト、クリエイター〕らの路線に属し、せりふは、Andrei Tarkovsky〔アンドレイ・タルコフスキー：映画監督〕、John Fante〔ジョン・ファンティ：小説作家〕らのそれを思わせる。その興奮して不恰好なところと全体に漂う優雅さの妙な組み合わせが醸し出す世界は、一見 ファンタジーあるいはSFの感があるが、自伝的で想像力に富み、きわめて人間味がある。
最新作『2by2』は今年6月、ファミコン社から出版されたが、現在、作者は1980年代初頭の東京、場末の飲み屋にまつわる一連の物語を題材とする作品制作に余念がない。
今回の展覧会はジョナサンの初個展である。この展覧会をご覧いただければ、コミックブックアーティストとしての作者の、際立って個性的な制作活動に共感し、ここ数年間、作者が辿ってきた濃密な個人史から生まれた滋味あふれる作品全てを楽しんでいただけよう。
Jonathan Chandler is a self-taught British artist living and working in Tokyo.
Born to a youth worker and a skilled labourer in a coastal village in Suffolk, England in 1977, he went on to study practical film making at Derby University, culminating in a dissertation on John Carpenters classic sci-fi horror ‘The Thing’ and a self-made film about a floating green hat.
Jon founded UK based publisher Bonehouse Books in 2003. He has published seven volumes of his work including four volumes of the ongoing comic Boobytrap, and also published work by emerging underground comicbook artists. In particular, Bonehouse Books have produced works by Jonathan`s dad Charles and with the teenage artist Michael Adebayo, releasing a hardback collection of his serial comic They Call Him… The Midnight Ninja. In 2007 Bonehouse Books collided with another UK self publishing group Famicon Express (the publishing arm of the UK arts collective Famicon) to form some sort of global spanning unit, publishing and distributing works together.
Also in 2007 Jon curated a group exhibition at Bodhi gallery on London`s Brick Lane. The show was a look at his comics work, Battle For the Planets, reinterpreted by underground comic artists in the UK. He designed a Color of Money skateboard for the Cherryvale Skate Team in 2007, and contributed art to the Cubist Dogs exhibition at the View and Ask Gallery in London, curated by Famicon in 2008. Jon’s work has been published in several anthologies (Sturgeon White Moss), magazines (Believer Magazine), and most recently the European newsprint, Modern Spleen.
Since late 2007 Jon has been living in Tokyo, investigating the underbelly of the Japanese manga industry.
Jon`s work rests somewhere between the lines of Raymond Pettibon, Russ Nicholson, and Gary Panter, and conjures up a narrative in the accent of Andrei Tarkovsky or John Fante. This conjured world , an odd combination of sweeping elegance and frantic clumsiness , is autobiographical, imagined and vividly human, despite its pretensions towards fantasy and science fiction.
His latest book, 2by2, was published by Famicon Express in June of this year and he is currently working on a story set in Tokyo’s backwater bars of the early ‘80s.
Sukiwa gallery in Nishiogikubo will host Jonathan`s first solo show. The exhibition will explore his idiosyncratic praxis as a comicbook artist and function as a repository for his characters from the dense personal mythology he has traced through his work over the past few years.
